Once upon a time braces, or orthodontics were almost a rite of passage just for children and teens. In recent years, more and more adults have been getting braces to straighten their smiles. Dr. Holly Krystek at Lifetime Dentistry wants you to know that no matter what your age, if you are considering getting braces, you need to remember that good oral hygiene is extremely important. In fact, it will be even more important, once your braces are in place.
While wearing your braces, make sure you keep your teeth clean by brushing and flossing regularly. At the minimum, replace your toothbrush every three months. While you are wearing your braces, remember to brush after every meal, since food can collect around your dental work. Another good idea is take your time brushing your teeth. Instead of rushing through it, brush your teeth two or three at a time to make sure they are clean.
Even though it looks like you have a lot of hardware in your mouth, you still need to see your dentist for cleaning and exams. It’s also extremely important to keep all your orthodontic appointments. Skipping or delaying appointments will extend the time you will have to wear your braces.
No one expects you to stop eating while you have your braces! But there are certain foods you may want to avoid. Chewing on ice, or hard candy can bend the wires. Nuts, popcorn and sticky foods can not only bend the wires, but get stuck in your braces. An overall healthy diet is important, since too much sugar could lead to decay around the brackets.
