It’s easy to let our lives get a little too busy for comfort. When this happens, little things start to slide. Oral hygiene, however, is no small thing! Here are some basics to remember as you keep up with basic mouth health habits.

Brush: Remember to brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes. Try setting a timer if you can’t seem to make it to 2 minutes on your own. This is a great time to listen to some of your favorite tunes, plan, or reflect on the day.

Floss: Be sure to clean between your teeth once a day. This should be done with an ADA Accepted interdental cleaner, such as dental floss, a water flosser, or an approved dental pick. It should take 2-3 minutes to clean between all of your teeth (don’t forget to floss behind your back molars!) If conventional flossing is difficult, talk to Dr. Holly Krystek about flossing alternatives.

Use Mouthwash: Adding mouthwash to an oral health routine can be helpful for some people (though it is never a substitute for brushing and flossing). Choose a therapeutic mouthwash, rather than merely a cosmetic one. Check for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on the packaging to ensure a quality product.

Chew Gum: Chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after eating helps clean teeth by stimulating saliva production in your mouth. Saliva fortifies tooth enamel, removes plaque and food particles from the mouth, and neutralizes dangerous acids.

Visit Your Dentist: Support your home health habits with regular visits to the dentist. These should be scheduled twice a year. To schedule your appointment in the Muscatine, Iowa area, call Lifetime Dentistry at 563-263-9082. Dr. Holly Krystek and our team will be happy to help you!
