Poor oral hygiene can cause an increase in acids and the amount of bacteria in your mouth. This condition will put your teeth at a higher risk for cavities. With early detection, our dentist, Dr. Holly Krystek can often treat a single small cavity on a tooth with a basic dental filling.

If a cavity is large, or the tooth has more than one cavity, Dr. Krystek might recommend restoring the tooth with a dental crown. This process will replace the tooth enamel with a material, such as gold, porcelain, or a metallic alloy.

The process starts with Dr. Krystek using a drill to remove the tooth’s enamel. This leaves behind an abutment made up of the remaining layers of the tooth.

Dr. Krystek will then create an impression of the abutment and the nearby teeth. The abutment will then be covered by a temporary crown. The impression will be sent to a dental lab that will create your crown.

A member of Dr. Krystek’s staff will schedule a second appointment when your crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and Dr. Krystek will cement your new permanent crown in place over the abutment.
